New project: Women-led tree planting in Uganda

New project: Women-led tree planting in Uganda

We are delighted to showcase our latest project which is a women-led tree planting project in Uganda, in partnership with the International Tree Foundation.

This initiative supports a local women in Uganda to restore degraded land and empower sustainable livelihoods. Delivered in partnership with Alpha Women, the project combines tree planting, land restoration, training and fuel-efficient cookstoves to build climate resilience and economic opportunity.

The project currently supports 300 women and girls across four villages, improving soil health, reducing erosion and landslides, increasing food security and income, and strengthening women’s leadership.

Following successful work in Mbunga, the project is expanding into Rukoki sub-county, one of the most climate-vulnerable areas in the region, where communities face soil erosion, landslides and climate-related shocks.

Why this project matters

Research says women are disproportionately affected by climate change so we know it is important to ensure that our projects recognise this.

Women and girls face disproportionate impacts from climate change, largely because they make up the majority of the world’s poor, who are highly dependent on local natural resources for their livelihood.

When extreme weather disasters strike, women and children are 14 times more likely to die than men, mostly due to limited access to information, limited mobility, decision-making, and resources.

An estimated 4 out of 5 people displaced by the impacts of climate change are women and girls.

This Uganda tree planting project is a high-impact, nature-based solution that combines tree planting with women’s empowerment, delivering lasting environmental and social impact while building climate resilience at the community level.
